BILLINGS, Mont. - The Westminster men's golf team placed seventh out of 10 total teams and fifth out of the seven Frontier Conference teams at the Rocky Mountain Invitational, held at the Peter Yegen Jr. Club on September 27th and 28th. The Griffins finished with a three round total of 917, 11 shots ahead of Frontier Conference rival Montana Western and 49 shots behind Montana Tech for 4th place among the Frontier Conference teams.
The Griffins were led by Truckee, California native
Matt Hardy with a three round total of 227 which placed him in a tie for 35th place individually. Also scoring for the Griffins was senior Nick Cruz with 228 which placed him 37th, sophomore
Bryce Till with a 229 which placed him 38th, sophomore Christopher Dibblee with 235 placing him in 43rd, and junior Matt Stern with 240 which was good enough for 47th place. Playing as an individual, senior
Skyler Bloxham shot a three round total of 275 which placed him in 63rd.
Said swing coach Mike Nickas, “This was kind of a tough one to swallow. There were a lot of birdies to be made on that course and we just kind of left them out there.” Nickas continued, “We seemed to have a lot of difficulty reading short putts on Yegen's grainy greens.”
The women's placed 10th out of 10 total teams and eighth out of the eight Frontier Conference teams in the event. The Griffins finished with a three round total of 1187, just 21 shots behind the seventh-place University of Great Falls squad. The Griffins however, maintained a 16 shot advantage over UGF for seventh place in the conference standings.
The Griffins were once again led by freshman
Chloe McClintick, and her three-round total of 241. She finished 12th overall in the individual competition. Also scoring for the Griffins were
Shonti Breisch at 283, her first career sub-300 tournament, Jesika Hilton at 309, and
Jacqueline Graham at 354.
“Going into the tournament a little shorthanded, I can't say enough about how proud I am of the way our women's team played. Every one of our ladies posted their lowest career tournament rounds at some point this weekend,” commented Nickas. “Chloe had one of our highest finishes in years, Shonti posted three sub-100 rounds for the first time ever, Jesika played solidly, displaying her veteran leadership, and Jacqueline played out of her mind to help us keep it close. We keep getting better and better every time we go out.”
The Griffins have a few days off and will be headed up to Portland, Oregon this weekend for the Concordia University Cavalier Classic. This non-conference test is being held at the Robert Trent Jones Jr. Designed Heron Lakes Golf Club on October 5 and 6.
