Ski Teams Claim Western Regional Championships

HUNTSVILLE, Utah – The Westminster men's and women's ski teams each claimed the USCSA Western Regional Championship over the weekend at Snowbasin Resort. By virtue of winning the title, the teams earned a berth in the USCSA National Championships in Sunday River, Maine from March 2-6.

The men won the region title by claiming the team title in both the slalom and giant slalom. In Friday's slalom event, Westminster's Marc Perathoner won the event with a time of 1:17.58. Julia Karner finished third with Lorentz Gedde-Dahl finishing fourth. The three combined for a time of 3:56.08, over one second ahead of second place Rocky Mountain College.

On Saturday, the men's team won the giant slalom team title behind a first-place finish from Karer. He finished with a two-run time of 2:01.50 after having the second fastest time in each heat. Perathoner recorded a third place finish with Gedde-Dahl placing fourth.

The women also swept both events to claim the region championship. They won Friday's slalom event thanks to a 1-2 finish from Camilla Franschini and Kendall Brown. Perrine Voisin finished fourth and the Griffins posted a total time of 4:15.42 which was 13 second ahead of second place Rocky.

In Sunday's giant slalom race, Westminster again won the team title. Franschini led the way by taking the individual title with a time of 2:04.87 in two runs. Voisin finished third and Ulrikke Nicholaisen came away with a fourth place finish.

The women will be heading to Maine looking to defend the National Championship they won in 2009. This is the second consecutive trip to the National Championships for both teams in just the second year of the program.
