Warner Pacific (Ore.) outscored the Westminster men’s basketball team 15-5 over the final 5:28 of the game to hand the No. 9 Griffins an 82-72 loss on Saturday night. The loss is just the second all-time to a non-conference opponent in the Behnken Field House and snaps 11-game winning streak in the same situation. Westminster falls to 1-1 on the season with the defeat.

One year after dominating everyone with the presence of their bigs, the Westminster men’s basketball team went small to defeat in-state for Dixie State 68-53 on Friday night. Starting guards Wes Anderson and Blair Prowse combined for 43 points, including 10 during a six minute stretch in the second half that helped the No. 9 Griffins (1-0) take control of the game.

The Westminster men’s basketball team received a No. 9 national ranking in the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 Preseason Poll that was released on Monday. The Griffins received 232 total points in the poll.

The Westminster men’s basketball team was selected to win the Frontier Conference according to a poll of the conference coaches released on Wednesday. The Griffins received 47 total points and five first-place votes in the poll of the eight conference coaches.

The Westminster men’s basketball team released its schedule for the 2009-10 season today. The Griffins have put together one of the toughest schedules in recent years. They will face 14 teams that had a winning record last season and six that advanced to either the NAIA Division I or Division II National Tournament.

SALT LAKE CITY – The NAIA released the 2008-09 list of Scholar Teams on Monday, and Westminster had seven teams recognized for their classroom performance. Leading the way for the Griffins was the Men’s Cross Country squad with a combined team Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.75. That was the 10th-best GPA of any NAIA team and the top men’s cross country team.

SALT LAKE CITY – Geoff Payne from Westminster College is working out with the Utah Jazz of the National Basketball Association on Monday morning. Payne was named the 2008-09 NAIA National Player of the Year after leading the Griffins to the quarterfinals of the Buffalo Funds-NAIA National Championships and a 30-5 overall record.
