Westminster Student-Athletes Give Back to the Community

Ski Team Community Service
SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College Department of Athletics is pleased to announce that the 262 student-athletes at Westminster combined to complete a total of 1,038 community and volunteer service hours during the 2011-12 academic year.  These hours resulted in a student-athlete participation rate of 55% or an average of 7.2 hour per student-athlete who completed service hours.  This results in an increase of 500 more hours than the 2010-11 academic year.

"I'm pleased with the commitment our student-athletes and coaches have made to service learning." Director of Athletics Shay Wyatt stated.  "Our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) played a pivotal role in engaging their teammates to participate in community and volunteer service initiatives.  Our SAAC is committed to increasing the amount of volunteer service hours and student-athlete participation rate in the upcoming academic year."

Westminster student-athletes volunteer efforts included organizing and participating in youth clinics, visits to local elementary schools to assist with reading and academics, assisted with the Science Olympiad, partnered with the Utah School for the Deaf and Blind to teach basketball and skiing to students, food drives for the Utah Food Bank and assisted in the fight against cancer by helping organizations raise awareness and needed resources.
