LEWISTON, Idaho – The Westminster men's and women's golf teams opened the 2009 Frontier Conference spring season by placing fifth at the Lewis-Clark State tournament. The Lewis-Clark State men and the Rocky Mountain women won the team events in the fourth event of the season. The tournament was played at the Lewiston Country Club.
The Westminster men shot 337-330-339 for a three-round total of 1,006. They were led individually by Matthew Stern and his 249. Stern was the only Griffins to break 80 in a round with his 79 during the second round on Monday. Bryce Till shot a 250 followed by Christopher Ames at 252. Nick Cruz at 256 and Max Babson at 275 rounded out the Westminster individuals.
The Griffin women took fifth with a team score of 1,469. They shot 506-480-483 during the event to come from seventh after the first round back to fifth. Shonti Breach led the Griffins with a 344, shooting 120-115-109. Jesika Hilton finished with a 351 and her 105 in the second round was the best round by a Griffin. Jessica Roestenburg shot 365 while Tawnee Espinoza went 409 to round out the Westminster team.
The next event for the Griffins is the Westminster tournament on April 20-21. That will be played at the Wingpointe Golf Course and be the fifth of six total events to determine the Frontier Conference champions.
