Griffins Win Several Conference Awards

SALT LAKE CITY – McKenzie Jessop highlighted the individual honors being named the Frontier Conference Player of the year and leading four players from the Westminster women's basketball team being named all-conference. The awards were announced this morning by Frontier Conference Commissioner Kent Paulson.

Along with being named Player of the year, Jessop was also named the Defensive Player of the year and First Team All-Conference. Nicole Yazzie was named the Freshman of the Year and First Team All-Conference. Keshia Catten made First Team All-Conference and Allie Eastman was Second Team All-Conference. Head coach JD Gustin was named the Frontier Conference Coach of the Year.

“We are excited the coaches thought so much of our kids,” Gustin said. “I am proud of their individual accomplishments, but we all feel this is a team thing.”

Jessop, a 5-11 senior forward from Murray, Utah, leads the team in scoring and ranks fourth in the conference at 14.1 points per game. She leads the conference in field goal percentage at 56.1% and steals at 3.2 which is fourth nationally. She has scored in double figures 24 times this season and has posted four double-doubles. She becomes the third player from Westminster to win Frontier Player of the Year and the first to win Defensive Player of the Year.

“For Jessop to be MVP and Defensive Player of the Year is quite impressive,” Gustin said of his senior. “She has been incredible for us this season and she is very deserving.”

Yazzie, a 5-7 freshman guard from Taylorsville, Utah, leads the conference in assists at 4.6 per game. She ranks second on the team and sixth in the conference in scoring at 13.2 pre night. From beyond the arc Yazzie averages a conference best 2.4 makes per game while making 41.7% of her attempts to rank 13th nationally. She also leads the conference and is 22nd nationally with a 1.72 assist/turnover ratio. She becomes the second Griffin all-time to win Frontier Conference Player of the year and is the first Westminster freshman to be named First Team All-Conference.

Catten, a 5-8 senior guard from Murray, Utah, makes the All-Conference First Team after averaging 13 points per game and shooting 43.7% from beyond the arc. Catten is second on the team in assists at 3.4 per game and has a 1.62 assist/turnover ratio. She has reached double figures in scoring 21 times this season and posted one double-double. She was twice named the Frontier Player of the Week this season and is named all-conference for the first time at Westminster.

Eastman, a 5-10 freshman guard from Woodruff, Utah, was named Second tam All-Conference after posting 11.7 points per game. She is shooting 40.8% from beyond the arc and her 1.8 steals per game is second on the team. Eastman reached double figures in scoring 20 times during the season and she has missed the last three games with an injury. She becomes just the fourth Griffin to be named Second Team All-Conference.

Gustin was named Coach of the year for the second consecutive season and second time on his career. He has guided the team to a 26-5 mark this season and back-to-back regular season championships. His team leads the conference in six statistical categories and can be found in the NAIA top 50 in 15 categories. The team is currently ranked ninth in the NAIA coaches' poll which is a school best.

The four selections to the all-conference teams is the most for a single season at Westminster. The three players on the first team is also a school-best. The previous best for a single year was the three they received last season. Westminster also had two players on the first team last season.

Lewis-Clark State also had four selections followed by Carroll College, Montana Tech and MSU-Northern with three players, Rocky Mountain College with two players selected and Montana Western with one.

The all-conference team is determined by vote from the league's eight head coaches.
