SALT LAKE CITY – It took into the 100th minute before
Dennis Sellis would find the back of the net and give the Westminster men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Northwestern (Iowa) on Dumke Field. The two teams played through a scoreless 90 minutes of regulation and nine minutes of overtime before the game winner. With the victory, Westminster improves to 2-1 on the season while dropping Northwestern to 0-2-1.
After recording a 13-3 advantage in shots through regulation time, Westminster managed the game's only goal on the second shot of overtime. Sellis took a through ball from
Nic Duncan and buried inside the far post from 10 yards out. It was the first goal of the season for Sellis and the first assist for Duncan.
The Griffins dictated much of the action and finished the game with 15 shots, seven on goal, and eight corner kicks. Nine different Griffins attempts at least one shot with four getting away multiple attempts.
Sellis and
Jace Maxfield were tops in shots with three each.
Damir Sabanovic earned his second win of the season with two saves between the pipes.
Westminster will return to action on Saturday, September 4 when they host Olivet Nazarene in a 4:30 p.m. game on Dumke Field.
