SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster men's soccer team entered the first regular season edition of the 2010 NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches' Top 25 poll at No. 17. Westminster received 251 points in the poll that was released by the NAIA on Tuesday. The Griffins went to No. 17 after not receiving any votes in the preseason poll that was released on August 16.
Westminster has started the 2010 season with a 3-1 record and is ranked in the Top 25 since being No. 25 in the poll released on September 26, 2007. The Griffins key victory of the young season came over The Master's College which is ranked No. 22 in the current poll after starting the season at No. 2
No other team from the Frontier Conference is rated in the Top 25, however Bellevue from the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference sits at No. 21. The Frontier, MCAC and Dakota Athletic Conference combine to form the Unaffiliated Conference Tournament in November with the champion receiving an automatic invite to the NAIA National Championships.
Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) remains No. 1 in the poll. The unanimous choice as the No. 1 team with 21 first-place votes, the Blue Raiders tallied 591 total points. Simon Fraser (B.C.) came in at No. 2 followed by Rio Grande (Ohio), Embry-Riddle (Fla.), and Notre Dame College (Ohio).
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences, independents and unaffiliated groups. The second regular season Coaches' Top 25 Poll will be announced on Sept. 14.
Westminster puts the No. 17 ranking on the line on Friday, September 10 when they host Point Loma Nazarene for a 4:30 p.m. game on Dumke Field. The game will be available to watch online on Griffins TV which is available at www.WestminsterGriffins.com/GriffinsTV.
