Westminster Finishes Third at Frontier Opener

HELENA, Mont. – The Westminster College men's golf team finished third at the Carroll College Invitational that was played on Monday and Tuesday.  The first Frontier Conference event of the year featured seven teams and 51 individuals.

Carroll rallied to win the team title with a three-round score of 886.  They were in third place following the first round before making up seven strokes in the second round and then shooting a final round 292 for the four stroke win.  Rocky Mountain College finished second at 890 with the Griffins in third at 903.

“We had some good individual performances,” head coach Chris Hendrickson said.  “This is a good way to start but, we need to keep working and getting better every day.”

Westminster would hold a three stroke lead following the conclusion of the first round on Monday morning.  The Griffins shot a school record 291 in the round and were three shots ahead of Rocky Mountain.  Westminster struggled a bit in the second round with a score of 316.  They rallied in Tuesday's third round to shoot 296 to place two strokes ahead of Lewis-Clark State who finished fourth.

Dane Jensen had a stellar collegiate debut for the Griffins.  Jensen shot a school record 66 in the opening round en route to a final score of 215.  He finished in a three-way tie for first with Jim Mee from Carroll and Eric Gravbrot of Montana State-Billings.  Mee won the individual title on the fourth playoff hole by sinking a 25-foot birdie putt.

Robby McKee finished tied for 14th after a score of 227.  McKLee joined Jensen with three rounds in the 70's, including a final round 73.  Brian Panter placed 21st with his score of 231 with Collin Wilkinson right behind in 22nd thanks to a score of 232.  Matt Bushman shot a 240 and finished tied for 34th.  Tanner Kopan played as an individual from Westminster and finished tied for 28th at 235.

Westminster returns to action on Sunday at the Rocky Mountain College Frontier Event in Billings, Mont.  The event will be held at the Peter Yegan Golf Club with the first two rounds on Sunday and the final round on Monday.
