Griffin women make finals, men fall just short

MISSOULA, Mont. – The 17th-ranked Westminster College women's golf team qualified for Tuesday's championship match of the 2012 Frontier Conference Tournament by defeating Montana State-Northern in the semi-finals on Monday. The Westminster men fell two strokes short of making the final in a tough loss against No. 21 Rocky Mountain College.

The Griffin women earned a bye in the quarterfinal round by winning the regular season title. They defeated MSU-Northern in the semis by a score of 315-366. Westminster played with just four players as Jenteal Jackson sat the match out. Jackson is the regular season champion in the conference. Mari Hutsi led the Griffins in the match by shooting a 77. Brandi Bork and Candace Dechant each shot a round of 79 with Mikayla Williamson completing the score with her 80.

Westminster will face Rocky Mountain in the finals on Tuesday. The third-seeded Rocky upset second-seeded Lewis-Clark State 311-321 in their semi-final meeting. Rocky defeated Montana Tech 313-386 in the quarterfinals.

The Westminster men entered as the No. 4 seed and advanced to the semi-finals after a 284-315 win over No. 5 MSU-Northern in the quarterfinals.  Tanner Kopan led the Griffins with a season-best 69 in the match. Brian Panter shot 70 with Dane Jensen and Robby McKee both shooting 73.

In the semi-finals, Westminster gave top-seeded Rocky everything they could handle. The Griffins dropped the match 281-283 and will face No. 2-seed LCSC in Tuesday's 3rd-Place match. McKee shot 69 against Rocky to post a new season high. Matt Bushman finished the semis with a 70 and Jensen posted a 71.

The 36-hole final will begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday at the Larchmont Golf Course.  The winner of the championship matches will receive an automatic invite to the NAIA National Championships next month.
