WHITEFISH, Mont. – The Westminster College men's and women's golf teams picked up several conference awards today as Frontier Conference commissioner Kent Paulson announced the 2011-12 All-Conference Teams. In total, Westminster had five players named all-conference for their performance during the season.
Dane Jensen of the men's team and
Jenteal Jackson of the women's team were each named the Frontier Conference Players of the Year. This is the second consecutive season that Jackson has won the award and the first for Jensen. He also becomes the first Westminster men's player to ever take home the top conference honor.
Westminster swept the women's awards as
Mari Hutsi was named the Freshman of the Year and head coach
Chris Hendrickson was named Coach of the Year. Hendrickson won the coach honor for a second straight year while Hutsi becomes the first Griffin to take home the freshman award.
Jensen was the only member of the men's team to make one of the two all-conference teams. He becomes just the second Griffin male player to ever be named to receive all-conference recognition. Jensen won the individual medalist honors for the season by shooting 635 during the three regular season events. The junior from Pleasant Grove, Utah held a 15 stroke advantage over Connor Rakowski of Rocky Mountain for the individual title. Jensen is expected to receive an at-large invite to the NAIA National Championships when the field is announced.
Joining Jackson on the Frontier Women's First team is
Brandi Bork and Hutsi. This marks the second straight season that Westminster has put three players on the first team.
Mikayla Williamson was also honored as a Second Team All-Conference performer.
Jackson won the top individual award after leading the regular season standings with 679 strokes. Bork finished second with her 688 total strokes and Hutsi finished fourth with 700 strokes. Williamson posted 714 strokes during the three events to place seventh overall.
The Westminster women are hoping for an at-large invite to the NAIA National Championships after they were upset in the championship match of the conference tournament on Tuesday. The team is currently ranked No. 17 in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll.
