Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College men's soccer team wrapped up the Westminster Labor Day Classic with a 2-0 upset of fourth-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) on Monday afternoon at Dumke Field.

Westminster (3-2) opened the scoring in the 33rd minute when Trenton Petersen got his head on a free kick from Manuel Deunas and snapped the ball into the goal from inside the penalty area. The goal was the first career goal for Petersen and his first career game-winner snapped the Griffins two-game losing skid.

The Griffins would add some insurance in the 81st minute as Ryan Smith would rebound his shot off the post and put it away for his second goal of the season. Smith originally slid a shot under the keeper on a breakaway, but that shot hit the right post.

Westminster finished the afternoon with a 14-7 edge in shots, including a 10-3 advantage after halftime. They got nine of those shots on goal while also attempting four corner kicks.

Smith led all players with five shots on the afternoon and the senior put four of them on goal. Jordan Conroy and Nick Cummings each took two shots and out one on target.

Logan Butzier earned his second career shutout behind five saves and he improves to 3-1 on the season.

The Griffins return to action on Saturday as they travel south to St. George, Utah for a contest against Dixie State (Utah). The action from Hansen Stadium will begin at 8:30 p.m.
